2020 Scholarship Winner Damali Willingham Featured as Guest Conductor of Landmarks Orchestra

Damali Willingham, winner of the Gena Branscombe Project’s 2020 scholarship in conducting, conducted the Landmarks Orchestra in Boston last week on a concert entitled “Seen/Unseen: The Symphonic Legacy of Black American Women.” The event took place at the DCR Hatch Memorial Shell on July 26, and featured a program of music from an array of black, female composers like Margaret Bonds and Florence Price, as well as living composers Nkeiru Okoye, Jessie Montgomery, and Terri Lyne Carrington.

Just as Miss Branscombe sought to perform the works of her contemporaries and those of underrepresented women composers, we are proud to see her legacy continued through modern-day concerts such as these. Congratulations to Damali, and thank you for your advocacy and dedication!
